Students Attend Youth Parliament Programme PDF Print E-mail

Recently, the Student Council Committee of Olympia College, Penang have been invited to participate in the Youth Parliament Programme. A total number of 150 youths attended the inaugural ‘Mobile Youth Parliament’ sitting at the Dewan Persidangan Universiti, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The event was organized by the Malaysian Social Intellect and Capacity Building Association (Pemkis).

There were total of 4 motions debated during the event. The motions included ‘employers want employees who have work experience compared to higher qualifications’, ‘there should be an automatic registration as a voter for youths at the age of 21’, ‘the Federal Government should not be blamed for the youths’ moral decay’ and ‘Lynas project brings more harm than good’. The first motion was rejected by the Parliament members while the others were accepted.

At the end of the session, the participants were given the certificate of participation and it is a good exposure for the students to enhance their knowledge and debating skills. The students were accompanied by Ms. Zulfa, the Student Council Advisor. According to the Project Director, Ms. S. Sumathi, the programme was held to empower the youths and hone their skills in debates.
